Supporting and Encouraging Student Success

Mission Statement

The School Counseling Office is an integral part of what students need to become well rounded, physically as well as mentally healthy adults.  In a collaborative effort between home and school, students will receive personal/social, academic and career development through the delivery of guidance and counseling activities.

Our goal is to motivate and inspire students to thrive and learn that they have a purpose in life that only needs to be discovered. Given the appropriate support and resources students learn to understand themselves, make responsible decisions, develop coping skills, and respect others as they work toward becoming life long learners and successful 21st century citizens.

Philosophy

The counselors at Lake Ridge Middle School believe:
  • All students can learn and should be supported academically.
  • Learning requires the active participation, mutual respect, and individual accountability of students, teachers, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Learning is a lifelong process.
The school counseling program should:
  • Be planned and coordinated using specific goals and developmental student competencies that address the needs of all students.
  • Ensure that all students have equal access to a comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Use data to drive program development and will use this data to analyze and improve the program on an annual basis.
  • Base classroom lessons and activities on the Prince William County Guidance Curriculum which incorporates the personal, social, academic and career domains and will include activities that address closing the achievement gap.
All school counselors at Lake Ridge Middle School will:
  • Adhere to ethical standards as advocated by the American School Counselor Association.
  • Continually assess their individual activities & programs to ensure the goals of the school and the goals of the school counseling program are being met.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, & staff to assist with student’s developmental needs.
  • Participate in professional development activities

Options for Education after High School
4-Year Colleges- Students earn a degree once they have completed a program of study.  They usually offer a bachelor's dregree in the arts (e.g. English, history, drama) or sciences (e.g. biology, computer science, psychology, engineering).

2-Year Colleges- Students earn an associate degree once a they have completed a two-year course of study. Some colleges award certificates to students who have met course requirements and are ready to practice in their career fields. Some students start at a two-year college then transfer to a four-year college due to financial issues or to improve their gradesbefore going to a four-year college.

Vocational or Technical Schools- They usually offer programs that are two years or less. The schools provide students with hands-on experience related to their future career interests. Students typically earn a certificate for the particular skill or trade upon completion of the program.
Keys to having a successful school year
THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER:
Get involved:
  • Parents need to get involved in their children's lives even though your children may just want you to disappear. Middle school students tend to have a more positive school experience if they have independence with a little guidance from those who love them most. Talk to your child about school especially grades, their friends, their activities and their goals.
  • Students need to get involved in some type of extracurricular activities and stay busy with positive ways to spend their time. Activities could include; sports, clubs, volunteering, community or church activities, and tutoring or mentoring.
Attend school everyday unless they are truly sick

Get an adequate amount of sleep

Eat healthy well balanced meals everyday

Pay attention and take notes in classes

Write down assignments and make sure to plan ahead of time for up coming due dates

Complete and turn in all assignments

Read for pleasure everyday

You want to make sure that you allow for some independence as your children are growing up and need to learn how to be responsible for themselves in order for them to be successful, positive contributors to our society.

College admission requirements get more challenging every year.  So thinking ahead will help open many doors and allow them to have more opportunities and options available to them.

Approach each day with a positive attitude
